Ahmedabad: Zydus Hospital's burns and plastic surgery department, led by senior plastic surgeon Dr. Girish Amlani, has reported significant progress in managing severe burn injuries across Gujarat. The hospital has treated more than 300 patients with burns covering over 50% of total body surface area (TBSA) in the last five years, with a survival rate exceeding 90%.
The department handles a range of cases, from minor injuries to extensive burns. Recently, a 40-year-old police officer with burns over 65% of his body was treated, requiring skin grafting. The team used an electric dermatome and meshed skin grafts to expand donor skin, a technique also applied to patients from the 2025 Air India crash in Ahmedabad.
Critical care is provided in a dedicated Burn ICU, managed by Dr. Pratibha Dileep and Dr. Chintan Dhebar, focusing on fluid balance, infection control, and organ support. The hospital also treats pediatric and obstetric cases, including a 3-year-old with 30% scald burns and a pregnant woman with 60% burns, both of whom recovered.
Given Gujarat's industrial base, the hospital sees many electrical and chemical burn cases. Electrical burns often hide deep tissue damage, requiring multidisciplinary care. The team, including Dr. Jalpa Mehta and Dr. Priyanshu Makwana, emphasizes complete wound management and rehabilitation, including physiotherapy and psychological support.
