The Federal Reserve Board on Monday expressed deep sadness over the death of Alan Greenspan, who served as chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006.

Greenspan led the central bank through periods of economic expansion, financial volatility, and the dot-com boom. His tenure was marked by a reputation for cautious monetary policy and cryptic public statements.

The Federal Reserve's statement did not provide details on the cause or date of death. Greenspan was 89 years old.

During his nearly two decades at the helm, Greenspan steered U.S. monetary policy through the 1987 stock market crash, the 1990s boom, and the early 2000s recession. He was succeeded by Ben Bernanke.
