Nigeria: Police Warn Officers in Ebonyi Against Extortion, Unlawful Phone Searches

Ebonyi State police commissioner warns officers against extortion, harassment, and unlawful phone searches, urging professionalism and respect for human rights.

The police command in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, has warned its officers against extortion, harassment, unlawful searching of citizens' mobile phones, and other unprofessional conduct.

Commissioner of Police Urunwa Okafor issued the warning during a strategic meeting with senior officers in Abakaliki on Saturday, following recent engagement between the Inspector-General of Police and the Strategic Management Team.

Okafor conveyed the IGP's directives, emphasizing discipline, accountability, and professionalism. She cautioned against incivility, abuse of office, and other unethical practices, and specifically warned against searching phones without a valid warrant.

She charged senior officers to strengthen supervision, warning that lapses leading to misconduct would attract disciplinary action. She also directed intensified intelligence gathering and raids on criminal hideouts ahead of the electioneering period.
