A Dutch man who confined his children in cages for years as part of a doomsday belief was arrested in 2019 after one of his sons walked into a bar and revealed the abuse, leading to the rescue of six siblings.
The son, identified as Israel, known as Jan, entered a bar in a small Dutch village in October 2019 and told staff about the horrific conditions at the family's remote home. Police were alerted and discovered a disturbing scene, rescuing Van Dorsten's children.
The children, aged between 18 and 25 at the time, had been forbidden from leaving the property for nine years, awaiting the apocalypse. They were kept in tiny, purpose-built cells in a concealed dungeon, subjected to beatings, starvation, and one was confined to a dog kennel for an entire summer.
Van Dorsten justified his actions by claiming his children were 'unclean' and that his treatment would 'stop evil spirits.' He was charged with depriving the children of liberty from 2007 to 2019 and alleged sexual abuse of two older children, but was deemed too unwell to stand trial after a stroke.
A 61-year-old Austrian handyman, identified only as Joseph B due to Dutch privacy laws, was imprisoned for assisting in isolating the children, though he was found not guilty of detaining three older children and abusing any of them.
