The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has urged regulators in Nigeria's electricity industry to deepen cooperation as the sector undergoes major reforms driven by the Electricity Act 2023.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Abuja, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello said the Act allows states to establish their own electricity regulatory commissions, making collaboration between the FCCPC, NERC, NEMSA, and state bodies increasingly important.
Bello highlighted the FCCPC's 2024 intervention over plans to replace obsolete Unistar prepaid meters as an example of successful regulatory cooperation, which brought together NERC, NEMSA, and distribution companies to address consumer concerns.
NERC's Anthony Essien warned that varying standards across states could discourage investment, while Anambra State's Nnaemeka Ewelukwa said state regulators would improve consumer engagement and investor-state relationships.
