Alice Morrison, the first recorded person to walk the length of Saudi Arabia, has swapped camels and desert for a solo hike through the Scottish Highlands. She walked the 44-mile (71km) Affric Kintail Way over four days, self-supported and wild camping.
Starting from Drumnadrochit, Morrison faced constant rain but enjoyed the conifer forests and cuckoo calls. She camped near Dog Falls and explored Comar Wood Dun, an Iron Age fortified house dating from 400BCE to 200AD, reflecting on the hard lives of its inhabitants.
The route passed through ancient woodland, including Scots pines and birch, and along Loch Affric. Morrison met only eight people in four days, relishing the solitude and self-reliance. She described the experience as making her feel 'alive' and 'queen of the world'.
At Glen Affric hostel, she was initially turned away during closing hours but was invited in by the warden, Chrissie, to buy supplies. Morrison shared stories of her Saudi trek for a sound art project recording poems and stories from visitors.
Morrison's journey ended by the river Affric, where she camped beside waterfalls. She plans to return to everyday life but cherishes the memory of her night in the wild, saying 'No billionaire is richer than I am that night in that place.'
