Background

Marilyn Gladu, the member of Parliament for Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong, says a decision to cross the floor and join the Liberal Party is paying off in terms of community investment. Gladu, a long-time Conservative, switched to the governing Liberals in April.

Speaking Tuesday to the Sarnia-Lambton Golden K Kiwanis Club, Gladu said she now receives daily emails announcing funding for local projects. She estimated the collective value of these announcements so far at $8 to $10 million, ranging from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars per project.

Gladu said such funding announcements were 'very infrequent' when she was in opposition. She added that the recent flow of money indicates the riding is 'on the government’s radar.'

Current situation

Gladu said the floor-crossing has also come with personal costs. She reported receiving death threats and being provided with a security detail. Her office was vandalized and closed for several days, and she has only recently resumed appearing at public events.

She now wears a mobile duress button that can alert the nearest police station. The RCMP and Sergeant-at-Arms assess threat levels for her attendance at events, she said. Initially, she was advised not to do open-air events, but the threat level appears to have subsided.

Gladu said she received no payout for switching parties and actually took a pay cut. She serves on the status of women committee but no longer as chair. She described the Conservative environment as 'very toxic,' saying she was denied the ability to speak on civil liberties as shadow minister.

Impacts

The federal funding is directed at local projects and initiatives in Sarnia-Lambton, which Gladu says could help diversify Canada’s economy away from dependence on the United States amid punishing tariffs. She highlighted the region’s role as 'a third of the petrochemicals and energy in the country.'

Potential projects include a soy protein plant or a low-carbon hydrogen facility, as well as upgrading infrastructure such as wastewater capacity to enable local building. Federal funds are being sought to support work already underway in St. Clair Township and elsewhere.

Residents and businesses in Sarnia-Lambton may benefit from increased federal investment, which could create jobs and support local development. However, the security concerns affecting Gladu could limit her public engagement, though she says the threat level has decreased.

Future outlook

Scenario analysis: The possibilities below are not certain predictions.

If the current trend continues, Gladu expects to make more funding announcements across the riding. She said, 'As soon as I’m receiving announcements, I’ll be making announcements all over the riding.'

Should the federal government maintain its focus on Sarnia-Lambton, the region could see further investment in energy and infrastructure projects. However, if the political situation changes or threats resurface, Gladu’s ability to campaign publicly may be affected.

The long-term impact on Canada’s economic diversification remains uncertain, but Gladu’s efforts could contribute to reducing reliance on the U.S. market. Whether these projects materialize depends on federal funding decisions and local capacity.
