Background
Nizhuhe Village is a small hamlet nestled in a deep valley carved by the Nizhu River, which meanders from south to north in Xuanwei City, southwest China's Yunnan Province. Historically, the shortest route from the valley floor to the mountaintop was a steep cliffside path, and a round trip took nearly six hours.
Children and their parents had to make this arduous journey at least once every 10 days to reach school. The challenging terrain made daily commutes impractical, forcing families to plan trips carefully.
Current Situation
On July 31, 2026, an aerial drone photo captured the newly operational cliff elevator at Nizhu River Grand Canyon. The 288-meter-high elevator began operation recently, standing side by side with another elevator that has been in service since 2022.
The Nizhu River Grand Canyon scenic area was completed and opened in 2022, introducing a 268-meter-high cliff elevator and a cable car system. These facilities are open free of charge to local villagers, and now the new elevator further enhances access.
Today, the combination of sightseeing shuttle vehicles, elevators, and cable cars has shortened students' journey to school to about 30 minutes. A dedicated passage has been set up for students, with police officers and dedicated staff members accompanying them along the trips.
