Background

A new grocery store serving Kansas City's Northland is getting ready to open its doors. World Fresh Market's grand opening in a strip mall off Interstate 35 on Northeast Chouteau Trafficway is set for noon on Wednesday.

The store is part of a city-backed Community Improvement District that will use sales tax money to revitalize the area, including the parking lot. Anthony Estrada, a consultant for the store, said, "All this variety is variety that you're not going to see in other stores."

Current situation

Estrada opened United Market in the Linwood Shopping Center in east Kansas City in May. Now, he is helping his friend, owner Eddie Musallet, open World Fresh Market. "We saw a diverse community that is underserved in the Northland," Estrada said.

To serve that diversity, there are six different aisles with food from all over the world. "The biggest challenge is logistics. You know, just getting us set up because we've got so much international product," Musallet said. He said that product is coming from coast to coast, California to New Jersey.

With a World Fresh Market already open near 103rd and Metcalf in Overland Park, Musallet said having those vendors in place has helped get the Northland store ready. "I think we've been working on this store for over five months now. So, to get it to this point, to get finally open and welcome everybody here," he said. "We really like the Northland."

Impacts

In addition to the international product, meat will be cut by hand on site. There will be traditional, Hispanic, and Hilal meats at all times.

"Our pastries are going to be incredible. We have a team of people that are going to be making handmade cheesecakes from different areas of the world," Estrada said. The store will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Future outlook

Scenario analysis: The possibilities below are not certain predictions.

If the store attracts the diverse community it aims to serve, it could become a regular shopping destination in the Northland. The Community Improvement District's revitalization efforts may further enhance the area's appeal.

Should the logistics of sourcing international products continue to be managed effectively, the store may expand its offerings or inspire similar ventures. However, if the demand does not materialize as expected, the store's long-term viability could be uncertain.
