Consumer watchdog Which? has compared the average cost of a basket of 93 popular grocery items at major UK supermarkets. The analysis covers Asda, Morrisons, Ocado, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco and Sainsbury's.
The basket includes a combination of own-label and branded goods such as milk, cheese and Hovis sliced bread. Which? calculates the average cost of each product throughout the month, factoring in special offers and loyalty scheme reductions where applicable, though multi-buy promotions are excluded.
Which? has withheld the complete product list to prevent supermarkets from changing the findings.
Current situation
Aldi has once again been named Britain's most affordable supermarket. A trolley filled with 93 commonly purchased products totalled £158.05 at Aldi in July, while the same haul came to £188.45 at Tesco, even after applying Clubcard discounts.
This indicates that families could end up spending an extra £30.40 on identical groceries at Tesco compared to Aldi, according to the monthly analysis. Lidl secured second spot at £160.70, merely £2.65 more than Aldi for the equivalent basket.
Asda claimed third position at £185.81, with Which? noting it continues to rank amongst the most economical supermarkets in their research, irrespective of loyalty scheme pricing.

Impacts
When comparing supermarket loyalty schemes, Sainsbury's Nectar prices undercut Tesco's Clubcard offerings. Sainsbury's with Nectar totalled £187.86 versus Tesco's Clubcard price of £188.45, a mere 59p difference.
However, Which? cautioned there's a 'sting in the tail (that) remains for non-members: without a loyalty card.' Sans Nectar pricing, Sainsbury's jumped to £197.85, placing it amongst the costliest alternatives, while Tesco (without Clubcard) stood at £195.63.
At the premium end, Waitrose topped Which?'s pricing table at £226.95. The consumer champion noted Waitrose is 'a staggering 44 per cent more expensive than Aldi for comparable items'. Ocado secured second place as the most expensive retailer, commanding prices 32 per cent higher than Aldi.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, remarked: 'While inflation remains stable for now, many households will be worried about prices going up in the coming months.'
She added: 'The discounters are still the cheapest supermarkets, while Asda beats Sainsbury's and Tesco's loyalty scheme prices according to our analysis. When walking into one supermarket over another – or forgetting your loyalty card – can mean paying over 40 percent more for comparable everyday essentials, switching where you shop is still the fastest way to slash your weekly grocery bill.'
If inflation rises in the coming months, the gap between discounters and premium supermarkets could widen further, potentially prompting more shoppers to switch. However, if supermarkets adjust their pricing strategies, the current rankings may change in future analyses.
