Franklin County residents will have several opportunities to hear from candidates ahead of the November general election, with forums scheduled for the 1st Franklin District representative race and the Governor's Council District 8 seat.
The 1st Franklin District seat has been vacant since state Rep. Natalie Blais resigned on Jan. 19. Speaker of the House Ronald Mariano opted not to call a special election, leaving the seat open until the November 2026 election. The winner will be sworn in next January after the Democratic primary on Sept. 1 and the general election on Nov. 3.
Three candidates are running for the seat: Democratic candidates Lora Wondolowski, president of the Greenfield City Council, and Corinne Coryat, Blais' former aide, along with Independent candidate Amy Lavallee, the Whately town clerk.

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the three candidates will discuss food access, farm viability, and the district's local food system at the Shelburne Falls Memorial Hall. The forum is organized by the Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA), Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Franklin Land Trust, Stone Soup Café, Shelburne Falls Memorial Hall Association, and Two Town News.
Moderator Monte Belmonte, co-host of the Fabulous 413 at New England Public Media, said the issues are 'undoubtedly linked.' He noted that Franklin County is a rural community with many farms, and residents want their representative on Beacon Hill to understand those priorities. He also highlighted that Franklin County is one of the poorest communities in Massachusetts, making hunger an important issue.
CISA Executive Director Jennifer Core said the county should strive for a 'singular food system' that incorporates everyone, rather than separate systems for those who can afford higher prices and those who need emergency food. She noted that Natalie Blais was a 'real champion' for these issues, so it is important for the community to hear candidates' perspectives on farms, food economy, and food security.
According to the USDA's 2022 Census of Agriculture, Franklin County has 733 farms and ranches and 71,519 acres of farmland. Attendees can ask questions at the forum or submit them in advance through an online form.
