A joint team from the western division of the Suriname Police Force raided a private residence on Krappahoeklaan in Nickerie on Wednesday, seizing a large shipment of illegal cigarettes.
Police officials said the team found 1,761 cartons of cigarettes from various brands at the location. A 50-year-old man, identified as M.G., was present during the raid and was arrested as the prime suspect.
M.G. was taken to the Nieuw Nickerie Police Station, where he confessed that the cigarettes belonged to him and that he had been selling them from his garage. He was released after paying a hefty fine.
The police emphasized that the trade in illegal cigarettes poses a serious threat to the nation's economy.
