COLOMBO, August 04 (Daily Mirror) - Key stakeholders have reached an agreement to proceed with the establishment of a new pipeline system connecting the Trincomalee oil tank farm with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) offshore buoy, paving the way for more efficient oil transfer operations.
The agreement was reached during a high-level discussion chaired by Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunathilaka at the Trincomalee District Secretariat. The meeting was held as part of the Minister’s inspection tour of the Trincomalee oil tank farm and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) facilities.
Representatives from the CPC, Prima Company, Department of Railways, environmental authorities, and other relevant institutions participated in the discussion. All parties agreed to support the pipeline installation project, which will allow oil to be transferred directly from large vessels at the port into storage tanks.
The CPC has already completed repairs on two oil tanks at the facility, while tenders have been called to restore three additional tanks. Authorities are also focusing on the modernisation of the tank complex, which includes 81 tanks jointly managed by CPC and Lanka IOC.
Plans are underway to upgrade 29 tanks to store large quantities of oil, with the long-term goal of developing Trincomalee into a major regional oil storage and distribution hub.
