Sri Lanka's Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala said in Parliament that the government is considering granting a one-year service extension to police officers who have reached the age of 60 and have a clean record of good conduct.
He made the remarks while responding to an opposition question about vacancies in the Police Department.
Wijepala also said 10,000 personnel from the Civil Security Department have been attached to the police service, with 6,000 already reporting for duty.
Acknowledging a shortage of human resources, the minister said measures are being taken to address the issue and reduce the heavy workload on lower-ranking officers.
