The Plateau State Government, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and a non-governmental organization, Ewe Rina Africa, has rescued and repatriated a young woman trafficked to Libya for prostitution.
The victim, 23-year-old Jummai Favour Garba, from Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, was reportedly trafficked by a syndicate and forced into sex slavery. Her ordeal came to light in June through a Facebook post.
According to the post, Garba, an athlete, was promised a sporting scholarship and a better life in Libya, but instead faced hardship. The post appealed for financial support to bring her home.
The state government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission, liaised with NAPTIP and Ewe Rina Africa to secure her rescue and repatriation.
Announcing her return on Facebook, the Irigwe Youth Movement said: 'Her return is a powerful reminder that hope can be restored and that collective action can make a meaningful difference. Welcome home, Jummai.'
